- And Sarah denied, saying, "I did not laugh," because she was afraid. And Avraham said, "No, but you laughed." The angel asks Avraham: “Why did Sarah laugh?” Sarah was afraid and she denied it, saying “I did not laugh.” And Avraham told her “You did laugh.” And we all wonder: Did Sarah lie? How can it be? We all know that sometimes we mess up in life, and when you want to do Teshuvah, it depends on how you do it. Sometimes we do Teshuvah because we’re afraid, and Chazal tell us that it becomes כשגגה - as if we didn’t do it on purpose. But sometimes we do Teshuvah from love, we accept that we did something wrong, and we’re here to listen to what it can teach us. And then you look back and say, wow! I’m really glad that I messed up because I wouldn't have gotten to a higher place without it. Said the Holy Sfas Emes: You know why Sarah said that she didn't lie? וַתְּכַחֵשׁ שָׂרָה...כִּי יָרֵאָה - Because she already did Teshuvah מיראה, so it's a clean slate. יֹּאמֶר לֹא כִּי צָחָקְתְּ - But Avraham said: No! I need you to take it to an even higher level and do Teshuva מאהבה. Say “I did laugh! I did mess up! But what could it teach me?” And when she did, she suddenly realized that her laughter was the best thing that ever happened to her.
