[#889] Ki Savo: An Attitude of Gratitude: Saying "Thank You" is not enough

Parshah - Ki Tavo
09/04/2017111

There's nothing that infuriates parents like when their children have a sense of entitlement that they deserve things for free. We want our children to have an attitude of gratitude, but how? The Rishonim teach us: וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְכָל הַטּוֹב – If you want to enjoy the good Hashem gives us, then listen to the secrets of Bikurim. You don't just say "thank you". וְשַׂמְתָּ בַטֶּנֶא וְהָלַכְתָּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם – We need you to take that fruit and work hard, schlep it all the way up to Yerushalayim, weave your own basket. We need you to schvitz in order to appreciate it. וְאָמַרְתָּ אֵלָיו הִגַּדְתִּי הַיּוֹם – It's not enough to say "thank you", we need you to tell your story, the details of why you appreciate it. The Gemara says how everybody came out, and all the Gedolei Yisrael came out to celebrate; you have to celebrate when people give gratitude, you have to make a big deal out of it. And that's how we get to appreciate the good life - וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְכָל הַטּוֹב… Today. Rabbi Shimon Semp, Rosh Yeshiva Talpios inspires through bringing Jewish spiritual concepts, with Chassidic Torah teachings down to earth. Collecting anecdotes, sayings and Divrei Torah from Chabad, Breslav and other Hasidic masters and Rebbes. Listen and get inspired. Subscribe, Like, Share, write us a comment, and stay tuned for more!
