And Reb Meir'l Premishlaner would say this fascinating Tale of Reb Shamshon Vertheimer who was called in to the emperor of Austria, and the emperor asks him "why do the Jews suffer more them any other nation?" And he says "you know why? Because the Jews fight and they don't accept each other," and the emperor said "come on, that's not enough of a reason." And then the emperor goes on a hunting trip, and he gets lost, and the only person who saves him is this Jewish peasant. And of course the emperor takes him back home, and when they get to the palace he says "I'll give you whatever you want. Tell me your desires. Do you want a house? Maybe a property? A business?" And the guy says "no". "So what do you want?" He says "Look, I'm a peddler, and there's a competition that started selling stuff in my zone; make sure he doesn't sell anything again." So the emperor calls back Reb Shimshon Vertheimer, and he says "Oy, I think you're right." You know why we do Teshuva before Rosh Hashana? Rosh Hashana is opportunities; but when we don't fix ourselves, we lose that opportunity and we're stuck. We're trying to fix somebody else, and trying to cut somebody else out. Elul is the time when we say אֲנִי לְדוֹדִי וְדוֹדִי לִי – Hashem help me become optimal, so that when Rosh Hashana comes I know what to ask, and then I'll achieve my dreams – good dreams… Today.
