And there was this great talmid chacham who once told R’ Kankele, “how can you go around and speak to people before davening? It’s a time to be silent!” Said R’ Yankele: In every siddur, it says before davening (based on the Ari HaKadosh), הֲרֵינִי מְקַבֵּל עָלַי מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה שֶׁל וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוךָ - ‘I hereby accept upon myself the mitzvah to love my friend as myself.’ You think that’s stam something you say? It’s something you have to do! What could be better in order to experience וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוךָ then going around and helping yidden? This talmid chacham later said that this opened up for him a new way of thinking.
